What’s New?

The Prius c makes 2 changes for 2016. One is the Safety Sense option package of Toyota that includes many new safety features. There’s also a new Persona Series Special Edition trim that enables Prius c fans to stand out more than usual.

Exterior Features

Size is not the only notable difference between the larger Prius Liftback and the Prius c. The subcompact Prius c has a two-piece back window which has been a common-Prius hallmark for the past many years, despite its influence on rearward visibility. The Prius c boasts a more conventional, and vertical rear end: a regular top-hinged hatchback, set between the tall vertical tail-lamps. A long roof spoiler is designed to lower fuel-wasting air turbulence at highway speeds.

Interior Features

The interior of the Prius is airy, there’s an extended view and more headroom than previous generations. Two 4.2″ multi-information screens are in the instrument panel. Basic information like fuel level and speed are displayed on the right. The left display is programmable, enabling the driver to select what information they need at any time. A heads up screen projects onto the windshield to keep the driver from having to look away from the road.

In adapting the hybrid technology of Toyota to the Prius c platform, each of the system’s main components benefited from the design focus to lower size, and weight while enhancing efficiency. The hybrid control computer manages the continuous application of electric power and gasoline engine based on the selected drive mode and driving demands.

Engine/ Fuel Efficiency

The 2016 Prius c is driven by an electric motor and a 4-cylinder engine. Acceleration is satisfactory around the city and on the highway, but test drivers agree that it feels so sluggish generally. The Prius c comes standard with the automatic transmission (CVT). The hybrid technology of Toyota integrates a gasoline engine, a nickel-metal hydride battery, and an electric motor. These are within the Continuously Variable Transaxle, the power control unit (inverter), a step-up converter, a DC-DC converter, and also the hybrid control computer. According to EPA fuel efficiency ratings, the 2016 Prius c receives 53/46 MPG city/highway that is remarkable for both hybrid and subcompact cars.

New for 2016 is a set of safety choices which include a pre-collision warning system and a pedestrian detection system. There’s also a radar controlled dynamic-cruise control system. The Prius c is available with Safety Sense C (TSS-C) technology of Toyota’s. Also as optional, TSS-C adds an extended list of extras including automatic high beams, a pre-collision system, and the lane departure warning system.
